"What Risks for What Benefits for GMOs and Pesticides?" Talk on new Findings in Parliament
The results of research on the toxicity of the world’s best selling herbicide, Roundup, on human embryonic cells will be outlined for the first time in the UK next week.
Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini [1] will present the findings of research, which suggest the marketed product may be more toxic at levels typically found as residues in food than the active ingredient which is responsible for killing vegetation. Professor Seralini’s paper [2] concludes that:
“the adjuvants in Roundup formulations are not inert. Moreover, the proprietary mixtures available on the market could cause cell damage and even death around residual levels to be expected, especially in food and feed derived from R formulation-treated crops.”
Professor Seralini will speak at a meeting organised by GM Freeze and chaired by Peter Ainsworth MP in Committee Room 12 of the House of Commons from 17.00-19.00 on 19 May 2009 [3].
Roundup is manufactured by Monsanto in various formulations for agricultural, urban and garden use. It is extensively used in North and South America on GM crops that are imported into the UK for animal feed.
