GM Freeze is facing closure – please help if you can
April 2020: Funding problems meant that we can’t keep operating GM Freeze as you know it and plans are being made to close the organisation down in the summer. However, if we can raise £4,000 now we can close in a way that will be helpful to those who come after us.
Please complete the form below to make a secure online payment with a credit or debit card (you will be transferred to Stripe to input your payment details) or:
- Donate online via paypal
- Send a cheque (made payable to GM Freeze) to GM Freeze, Open Space Cooperative, 41 Old Birley Street, Hulme, Manchester M15 5RF.
- Call us on 0845 217 8992 (see page footer for phone call costs) to discuss paying direct into our bank account.
Unfortunately the forms we use don’t work on some older ipads and iphones. If no form appears please use one of the alternative ways to donate.
Donations from individual supporters have always been hugely important to GM Freeze but we also rely on grants from trusts and foundations and we have now lost almost all our core grant funding due to shifting funder interests and competing demands. We have secured grants from several new foundations in recent years, but the new grants are all for specific projects. We have tried holding things together with a patchwork of project funding and small donations, but it’s just not sustainable.
We need £25,000 of additional core income to be able to run GM Freeze properly and respond to urgent situations like GM field trials, government consultations and breaking news. Without that additional funding GM Freeze as we know it will stop operating in the summer of 2020.
We aren’t expecting our supporters to come up with £25,000. Rather, we now want to raise £4,000 to help GM Freeze close in a way that will be helpful for those who come after us.
We are currently working on two exciting grant-funded projects; one developing plans to help everyone campaign more effectively for robust UK regulation of GMOs, while the other aims to change the way that GM is discussed and debated. We will complete both these projects, but we want to do more. We want to share the results far and wide. We also want to work with our members, supporters and others to ensure that the knowledge that GM Freeze has built up is not lost to the movement for a responsible, fair and sustainable food system.
We are hoping to raise an extra £4,000 to buy enough time to share what we have learnt, set up new ways for our members and supporters to keep connected, and archive our large library of resources in way that will be accessible for anyone who might want to use it.
Many of our supporters will have lost income due to the Covid 19 crisis, while others will be giving in other ways. We understand and thank you for all that you have done to support us over the years. However, if you can spare something in GM Freeze’s hour of need, we promise to put it to very good use.
